Sustainable IT is closer than you think

With Microsoft Surface and XMA

Your IT decisions matter.

They will play a key role in determining the experiences you can offer customers and colleagues, the capabilities your business possesses and, ultimately, your success over the coming years. But they also matter to the planet too.

Every second of every day, somewhere in the world, older devices, unable to keep up with modern demand, end up in landfill. New devices take their place, but not without significant energy consumption in their creation and transport.

It’s time to stop this. Microsoft has invested significant money, time and expertise into breaking this chain, and creating a more sustainable future for IT. One where we can still have new devices, without significant carbon emissions, waste produce or ethical concerns.

Here’s how.

Continue your journey to sustainable PCs

The rise of remote and hybrid working has driven up laptop sales at a time when we’re all trying to make environmentally aware and positive choices. Watch how Microsoft Surface can help your organisation, your people and your planet.

Microsoft Surface

A more sustainable way of working

From recycled plastics in construction to increased device efficiency for lower carbon emissions, every Surface device has been designed to maximise the precious resources that get used to make them. They’re long-lasting, so don’t need replacing as often, and are built in factories that meet rigorous energy and welfare standards, with no exploitation of staff accepted.

And that’s just the start. Microsoft is on a mission to make IT sustainable. By 2030, the business will be carbon negative, selling Surface devices that are 100% recyclable and much more besides.

Surface sustainability

Key areas

Supply chain

The IT supply chain is responsible for significant carbon emissions and challenges. That’s why every Microsoft partner has to meet significant ethical standards, including labour and wage practices. They also have to be capable of supporting a resilient supply chain, one which can deliver despite shortages and disruption.

Sourcing

Every Surface device requires at least some precious rare earth material to work. So, to ensure these materials are gathered in an ethical manner, without exploitation or conflict, every supplier faces regular audits and tests. Microsoft is also working to reduce the quantity of new materials needed per device, through recycling and efficient design.

Sustainability

Microsoft facilities, including the factories that make Surface devices, are well on their way to operating using 100% renewable energy. Add this to the increased use of recyclable material, the increased level of recyclability of Surface devices, and ever-improving energy efficiency, and you get better devices for you, and for the planet.
